Gattis homers twice, the Astros bat around in the fifth and McHugh continues strong run in Astros win.

Yesterday, the Astros exploded out of a prolonged offensive slump to even the series in New York setting up a series deciding matchup between Colin McHugh and Michael Pineda.

McHugh continued his reemergence as a rotation anchor with another solid start picking up his fifth straight quality start. McHugh cruised through the first six innings of the game before giving up a lead off walk to Greg Bird in the seventh followed by a Didi Gregorius two run homerun.

Across the diamond, Michael Pineda made his first start since going on the DL on July 30. Pineda opened the game solidly holding the Astros to one run over the first four innings. The early run came thanks to an Evan Gattis solo homerun in the second inning.

While the Astros looked like they were falling back into their offensive funk early, everything changed in the fifth inning. In the top of the fifth the Astros batted around (the fourth time in the series) scoring four runs. Making the inning all the more impressive is the fact that the Astros managed to bat around without the benefit of any extra base hits. Seriously, the Astros managed to break open the game with an infield single, single, bunt single (squeeze play), walk, sac fly, single, walk, and a wild pitch! Not everyone was able to get in on the fun though as Colby Rasmus struck out looking and got himself thrown out from the dugout for arguing balls and strikes.

Gattis added to the Astros lead with his second solo homerun of the game in the eighth inning. Man it would be nice if the offensive outburst Gattis has shown in this series is a sign of things to come. In three games in New York, Gattis has gone 6 of 12 scoring five runs with three homeruns while driving in six.

The Astros bullpen also continued to be one of the best in the business, pitching two and two thirds innings of scoreless baseball. Tony Sipp came in to close out the seventh, Pat Neshek pitched a clean eighth and Will Harris finished off the game with a perfect ninth.

Preview:

The Astros broke out of their offensive slump with a bang. Much to the chagrin of the Yankees, who didn't take kindly to Carlos Gomez bat flips. To which I say, bring'em on:

Everyone gets a bat flip.

Back to today's game. Collin McHugh takes the mound for the Astros. McHugh has been a different pitcher in August - he is 1-2 with a 1.67 ERA in four starts in August. He has rebound from a rough start to the season, his pre-All-Star ERA was 4.50 and his post-All-Star break ERA is 2.60.

McHugh is making his first start in Yankee stadium, this will be his second start against the Yankees - he gave up one run over eight innings, striking out eight.

Michael Pineda will make his first start since going on the DL on July 30 with a right flexor forearm muscle strain. Pineda is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in two career starts against Houston.

The Astros have just been saving up their offense for today.

It hasn't been fun to watch the Astros offense the past few weeks. Yes, walkoffs are great but this team reminded me of the worst part of the 2004 and 2005 teams -- they never seem to get the offense rolling down the stretch.

That said, offense wasn't a problem on Tuesday. The Astros scored runs in bunches. Five runs in the first inning, Four runs in the fifth, and six runs in the seventh. The Astros decimated the Yankees pitching.

The party started and finished with the batters in the lineup, Colby Rasmus, Evan Gattis, and Carlos Gomez. He had two hits and drove a collective 10 runs for the inning.

Rasmus drove home the first run of the game with a triple, and back-to-back doubles from Gomez and Valbuena score three more. Marwin Gonzalez drove home the Astros fifth run in the first with a single.

Rasmus got the party started again in the fifth with a double, he would score on a Gattis home run. Gonzalez went yard shortly after. Jason Castro doubled and scored on fielding error.

Ramus, again, got the Astros on the board first in the seventh -- forcing home a run with a walk. Gattis drove home two more with a single. Gomez put the cherry on top with a home run to put the Astros up 15-0.

Oh yeah, Dallas Keuchel was on the mound for the Astros. He was his normal bearded-self. He held the Yankees to three hits over seven inning while striking out three. Vincent Velasquez gave one run over two inning to close out the game.

The Astros and Yankees play an early game on Wednesday, 12:05 p.m. ct, in the rubber match.

Pitching Matchup:

LHP Dallas Keuchel (14-6, 2.37 ERA, 1.02 WHIP) vs. RHP Ivan Nova (5-5, 3.72 ERA, 1.24 WHIP)

Preview:

The Astros hope to end a long string of road woes, sending their ace Dallas Keuchel to the mound tonight against the New York Yankees. The Astros road record has kept them from running away with the AL West. They've lost 16 of their last 19 road contests, but look to even the series behind their best pitcher.

Keuchel could become the first Astros pitcher in seven years to reach 15 wins with a victory tonight. He's been less effective in his road starts this season, with a 3.65 ERA on the road compared to 1.35 at home. He's looking to break a string of three straight road losses.

The Astros face righty Ivan Nova who has struggled himself in his last three starts, posting a 5.19 ERA. He's had one previous start against the Astros, a 4-2 victory in 2014.

The Astros need a strong start from Keuchel tonight to reverse their pattern of tough outcomes in road games.

Feldman and Eovaldi match each other for eight innings

What Happened

Scott Feldman and Nathan Eovaldi went back and forth for eight innings. Two totally different styles of pitchers getting the same results. First let's talk about Feldman. For the fifth time out of seven starts since coming back from the disabled list he turned in a quality start. For the second time in his last three starts he gave up zero runs. Tonight Feldman went eight innings (his longest outing of the season) and gave up six hits, walking none and striking out six. The only trouble he had all night was in the seventh inning when he gave up back-to-back singles and had runners on first and third with no outs. He dug down and struck out Greg Bird, then got a fly ball to center field. Carlos Gomez made the catch and threw a strike to home plate where Hank Conger made a great tag on speedster Brian McCann to complete the double play.

On the other side Eovaldi was just as good. Pumping fastball after fastball at 98 plus, mixed in with his splitter and slider he kept the Astros hitters off balance all night. Like Feldman he only had one tough inning. In the sixth inning Carlos Correa started the inning with a single and Colby Rasmus folllowed with a walk. Carlos Gomez bunted them to second and third. Evan Gattis came up next and hit a hard chopper to first that was fielded quickly by Bird. Correa held up at third, but Rasmus didn't hold up. Rasmus ended up getting tagged out going back to second. Eovaldi got Luis Valbuena to fly out to end the inning.

After eight innings of stellar pitching by both sides it was time for the bullpen to do their work. Andrew Miller worked around a leadoff single by Gattis by striking out Valbuena and getting a caught stealing on pinch runner Jake Marisnick. In the bottom of the ninth our lefty specialist Oliver Perez came in to face the two lefties sandwiched around Alex Rodriguez. He didn't even give Brett Gardner a chance to hit as he walked him quickly. With Gardner on base, Perez then threw a pitch just a bit outside that rattled around the backstop and allowed Gardner to go to second. With first base open they elected to intentionally walk Arod to get to the next lefty, Brian McCann. Perez then walked McCann on five pitches. Chad Qualls was brought in to the unenviable position of having bases loaded and no outs. He got a fly ball, but it was deep enough to end the game on the bad side of a walk off.

Tomorrow the Astros will send Dallas Keuchel to the mound to face the Yankees Ivan Nova at 6 pm Central time.

Fun Facts

This was Feldman's longest outing since September 6th of last season when he went 8.1 innings.

Astros have now lost 29 of their last 38 road games.
