Bats Stay Cold, Astros Drop Rubber Game to Tribe 3-1

Quite nice of the Astros to fully embrace the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in recent weeks, unfortunately they forgot to thaw the bats back out for the weekend series with the Indians. Coming off consecutive games in which the offense only managed 3 hits each day, Houston had trouble with Indians starter Trevor Bauer all afternoon. The lineup also reached double digit strikeouts for the third consecutive day, whiffing 12 times after combining for 21 strikeouts Friday and Saturday.

Brett Oberholtzer pitched formidably without much support to continue another unfortunate trend. The lefty went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and 3 runs while striking out 6. Obie worked out of potential trouble in the 3rd inning, only allowing 1 run to score after the Indians put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Michael Bourn scored on a Carlos Santana sac fly, but Jose Ramirez ran the Tribe out of the inning trying to score on a ball that skipped just a few feet away from Carlos Corporan. Cleveland scored again in the 4th, doing their damage after the first two batters were retired with a Mike Aviles double followed by a Lonnie Chisenhall single through the right side. Not much notable action from that point until the 7th, when Obie balked Chisenhall over to 2nd after a pickoff attempt to first after Jon Singleton had already abandoned the bag to charge a potential bunt attempt. After the sac bunt was eventually laid down, Ramirez would redeem himself by knocking an RBI single to centerfield that ended Oberholtzer's day.

The Astros threatened to make me re-write the entire recap by mounting a rally in the 9th inning, but couldn't push any runs across, so the would-be rally will be nothing more than a footnote. Chris Carter pinch hit and walked, Jake Marisnick added to the threat with a 1-out single, and Jose Altuve loaded the bases with a 2-out poke to right field. Dexter Fowler struck out with the bases loaded to end the game and the road trip.

Astros Doing Astros Things

Brett Oberholtzer recorded a quality start, his 11th of the season. For the 13th time this season, the Astros failed to score more than 3 runs in a game started by Obie.

Jose Altuve collected 2 more hits and a stolen base

Mike Foltynewicz walked the first batter he faced. Then he struck out the next four.

The Astros struck out in 7 of the 9 innings today, and recorded multiple strikeouts in 4 separate innings

Houston went 1-8 with RISP, the only hit coming in the 9th and failing to score the lead runner, Chris Carter, who was stopped at 3rd.

Jon Singleton struck out twice, but also recorded an RBI double, continuing to confuse me emotionally. Who are you Big Jon? When will you get over .200?

Matt Dominguez continues to scuffle, going 0-2 with 2 K before being mercifully <strike>put down</strike> pinch hit for in the 7th (Castro one upped Matty D, grounding into a double play)

This doesn't necessarily qualify as Astros doing Astros things, but Marc Krauss had a little Groundhog Day moment for himself today, lining out sharply on almost identical plays to Indians RF Tyler Holt in the 1st and the 6th.

Even with a lackluster series at the plate this weekend, the Astros finished the road trip off at 5-5 with a week of AL West showdowns on deck at home. Oakland comes to town for 3 games beginning on Monday, with a 4 game set against the Rangers on the back end. The Boot can and will be ours by the end of the week.

Pitching matchup

LHP Brett Oberholtzer (4-8, 4.01 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) vs. RHP Trevor Bauer (4-7, 4.41 ERA, 1.41 WHIP)

Preview

The Astros finish their 10-game road trip today in Cleveland. Houston split four games with Red Sox, took two of the three from the Yankees, and thus far have split with the Indians. A win will go a long way in coloring the results of this road trip, but a .500 road trip is still impressive.

Brett Oberholtzer is the man tasked with winning this third game with the Indians. His recent track record says the Astros have a better than fair chance at a 'w'. Obe' has thrown a quality start in nine of his last eleven starts. His streak of six straight was broken in his last start. Oberholtzer faced the Yankees on August 19, he allowed four runs over 5.1 innings.

Oberholtzer faced the Indians twice last season, once as a starter and once out of the pen. Obe' made his major league debut as a reliever on April 21, 2013 against Cleveland, allowing two runs over three hits over two innings. He was much better in his start on September 20, holding the Tribe to two runs over 5.1 innings on five hits - recording 15 ground ball outs in the game.

Carlos Santana leads the way for the Indians in career at-bats against Obe' - he is 2-for-3 with a walk. Michael Brantley is 1-for-4 against Oberholtzer in his career; as is Mike Aviles, who's one hit is a double.

It's been a bumpy road to the beginning of highly-touted prospect Trevor Bauer's career to say the least. The former UCLA product was drafted third-overall in the 2011 MLB draft. He was traded to the Indians in the 2012 offseason in a deal that saw Didi Gregorius, Drew Stubbs, Shin-Soo Choo, and the now Astro Tony Sipp change hands. There had been public disagreements between the Diamondbacks and Bauer over his pitching routine, specifically the use of extreme long toss. Was it the cause for the trade? Either way he is in Cleveland now.

The young pitcher is getting his feet wet in his first full major league season. Bauer allowed five runs to the first five batters he faced his last start, but 14 of 15 on August 19 at the Twins. He has thrown a quality start in six of his last ten starts. Bauer has 3.36 ERA at home at Progressive Field.

This will be the first time any active Astros faces Bauer.

Indians walk-off in the ninth as the Astros fail to get a hit in the final six inning of the game.

It's wasn't a good night for the Astros bats. Houston failed to register a single hit after the third inning. Maybe they forgot to pack their hats for their bats to keep them warm in chilly Cleveland?

More likely, it was just the fact the Indians pitching staff was dealing. Starter Danny Salazar struck out seven and walked two over six innings. Cleveland's bullpen pitched three scoreless innings. The runs the Astros did score came on a throwing error in the third. Rightfielder Chris Dickerson fielded a cue shot from Jose Altuve, and fired a throw to home to try to get Jake Marisnick rounding third. Marisnick had singled earlier and moved to second on Robbie Grossman walk. Indians catcher Roberto Perez had a chance to get Marisnick but failed to field the ball - allowing both Marisnick and Grossman to score as the ball skipped to the backstop.

As for the Astros pitchers, Collin McHugh struggled and battled all night. The Indians collected hits in the first four innings of the game. But, the troubles for McHugh didn't start till the third. Cleveland strung together a Jose Ramirez double and a Michael Brantley single for their first run of the game - all with two outs. McHugh wasn't able to cover the bag and field the throw from the shifted Jose Altuve in shallow right field, allowing Carlos Santana to reach base.McHugh would walk Jason Kipnis to load the bases, but worked out of the jam with a ground out from Zach Walters.

The Indians would tie the game in the fourth. Lonnie Chisenhall and Chris Dickerson lead off the inning with singles. Roberto Perez bunted the runners over, and former Astros Michael Bourn grounded into a fielder's choice to score Chisenhall.

The Indians would threaten again in the eight, but Jose Veras (who also created the storm) and Tony Sipp weathered the storm. With runners on the corners as the result of a throwing error from Jose Altuve, Zach Walters grounded to Marwin Gonzalez. Gonzalez threw out Carlos Santana at home to end the threat.

Cleveland failed to get the go-ahead run in the eighth, but were able to get in the ninth. Jake Buchanan came into pitch for the Astros, and Tyler Holt welcomed him with a leadoff single. Roberto Perez bunted him over to second, and Michael Bourn walked. They both moved up a base with a wild pitch. On the six pitch Indians shortstop Jose Ramirez faced, he laced single to left to score the winning run. Drat!

Pitching matchup

Preview

It's only fitting that Doctor McHugh would pitch on the day of the return of Doctor Who. If you didn't know why Collin McHugh was called Doctor McHugh, now you know. McHugh takes the mound looking for his third win in as many starts, he also hopes to building upon the growing swell of momentum created by the return of the Dexter Fowler and the Astros offense.

McHugh has been brilliant since the All-Star break, posting a 2.27 ERA in 31.2 innings. In the month of August, has a record of 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA. He has been better on the road this season with 1.82 ERA in 54.1 innings.

Only, former Astros and Houston-native, Michael Bourn has a previous at-bat against McHugh - going 1-for-1.

Danny Salazar has some fantastic weapons in his high-90's fastball and split finger. His control of said pitches are still in question. He has made strides in the right direction since the All-Star break, dropping his ERA by two runs. In his last start, against the Orioles, he gave up two runs over five innings on four hits - walking one and striking out four.

This is will be the first time any active Astros faces the young fireball in the regular season.

Preview

The Astros Spoiler tour rolls on to Cleveland tonight. Cleveland are you ready to get rocked? No? That was bad reference wasn't it? ...moving on. Houston comes into the hotbed of the sports world with Lebron and Johnny Football at the moment as the Indians have won six of their last night (would say last ten but one game got postponed). Indians are attempting to keep pace with the Royals who are six games ahead in American League Central and the Tigers who sit in the final Wild Card spot 4.5 games ahead.

The Indians welcomed the Astros to the American League last season by beating them six out of the seven times they faced each other. Houston gets a chance this season to repay the favor with seven games during the playoff race as the Astros are one of the hottest teams in baseball at the moment.

Cleveland sends out Carlos Carrasco, who recently moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation. In his two starts since the move, he has pitched 12 scoreless innings - allowing five hits and striking out nine. In his last start he held the Orioles scoreless over seven innings. Carrasco has four quality pitches to work with, and has seen an increase in velocity to the mid-90s since his Tommy John surgery.

Carlos Corporan and Matt Dominguez are each 0-for-1 in their careers against Carrasco.

Brad Peacock maybe pitching for his starting rotation spot today in Cleveland. He hasn't had a quality start since June 28. In three of his last four starts, he has given up six or more runs. In his last start, he gave up five earned runs over 4.1 innings in Boston on August 16. Only compounding things, Peacock has a 6.69 ERA away from Minute Maid Park.

Only David Murphy and Justin Sellers have previous at-bats against Peacock and each are 0-for-1.

Series Prediction: The Astros take two of three from the Indians. Dexter Fowler continues to be hot and catalyst for the Astros offense, .
