The Astros first big trip to Wally World in 2013 is an exciting one as Brett Wallace slams two home runs and drives in four. Houston comes back to tie the Rays twice, but fall in extras and will be hoping that Jose Veras is not seriously injured.

Brett Wallace turned in the first four-RBI performance of his career on Thursday afternoon and almost won it for the Astros by himself. Unfortunately, Wallace had three hits while the rest of the Astros contributed only two. Wallace's first hit of the day was an opposite field shot off the Rays' Chris Archer in the fourth inning. Then in the eighth inning, he launched a three-run home run to tie the game at five. Houston certainly had their chances to win this ballgame, but instead Tampa Bay leaves town with three of the four wins in the series.

Jordan Lyles, like Wallace, spent some time in AAA Oklahoma City this year before coming back to Houston and having success. Lyles continued his impressive first half with 6.2 innings of six-hit ball against the Rays. Tampa Bay got one run in the first, but Lyles got into a groove and rolled into the seventh inning having thrown only 81 pitches. But in the seventh, he allowed a walk and a double before having a pitch sail high and wide of catcher Jason Castro to bring in Tampa Bay's second run.

Jake Elmore's sac fly produced Houston's second run back in the fifth, and with a 2-2 game going into the eighth inning, Astros' manager Bo Porter went with setup man Jose Cisnero. Cisnero has been awesome this year, but not so much on Independence Day as he started the inning with the never-effective four-pitch walk before surrendering three runs in the inning. Cisnero entered the game with a 2.27 ERA and left with a 2.95.

The first run allowed by Cisnero came on a fielder's choice, where shortstop Ronny Cedeno questionably did not make a throw to try and complete a double play. The other two came on the also questionable Tal's Hill in center field as Brandon Barnes tried to track down a Yunel Escobar fly ball and fell down trying to maneuver the hill. Wally came to the rescue for Houston in the bottom half of the eighth, and the Astros put runners in scoring position during the ninth and tenth innings without scoring.

Astros closer Jose Veras fired a scoreless ninth inning, and was brought out for the tenth. He didn't last long though, as he was hit on the hand by a James Loney liner. It's unknown what Houston's future plans for Veras are, but it would be almost impossible to trade him if he is forced to miss a decent amount of time.

Escobar burned the Astros again in the eleventh with an RBI double off Josh Fields, and Wesley Wright only made it worse as he got wild with a pitch that Escobar scored on later in the inning.

Houston will travel to Arlington to take on the Texas Rangers for the weekend. Lucas Harrell will take on Nick Tepesch in the opener tomorrow night.

Preview

Happy Fourth of July Astros fans. The Astros hope to continue their turn-around against the Rays. The man tasked with this job is Jordan Lyles. Lyles began the month of June with an ERA of 1.69 over four starts. In his final two starts in June, he gave up nine runs over nine innings. In his lastest start, Lyles completely lost his ability to locate his pitches and struggled all afternoon against the Angels. Desmond Jennings and James Loney have been Astro-killers this seires, Jennings is batting .417 with five RBI and Loney is batting .455 with two RBI.

Chris Archer was the pitcher chosen to stay in the rotation when David Price returned, over Alexander Colome. Archer has a fastball that can reach up to 98 mph, a devastating slider, and a serviceable change up. Archer got his first major league action last year with six starts in the majors. He collected a 4.60 ERA during that time. Since joining the club at the start of June, Archer has failed to pitch out of the fifth inning in three of his six starts.

Chris Carter drives in all four Astros runs tonight with two long balls, the first a solo shot in the second, and the second a three run shot in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie.

Chris Carter hits bombs. Let's just start tonight's recap right there. After being shut out for the first two games of this series the Astros offense broke things open late on the strength of a Chris Carter three run home run to give the Astros a 4-1 lead. The four runs were the most runs that the Astros scored in the previous eight games (that little tidbit comes courtesy of Brownie.) The homer by Carter was his second on the night. The first one came in the second inning to tie the score at one. It was great to see Carter have a breakout game at home tonight.

Pitching

Bud Norris was his usual self at home tonight as he pitched seven innings of one run baseball. The game didn't quite start out in Bud's favor however as the Rays played small ball in the first and manufactured a run on the strength of two singles and a stolen base. Over the next six innings Bud only allowed four hits. He also gave up three walks and struck out five batters. Bud lowered his ERA down to 3.22 tonight with the solid outing.

Setup man Jose Cisnero came in to work the eight and was able to put up a zero. Cisnero gave up a lead off single to start the eighth, but was able to quickly undo the damage by inducing a double play. He ended the eighth with a strike out to hand the game over to closer Jose Veras.

Veras came in to work a scoreless ninth and earn his 17th save of the year. He gave up a two out single, but otherwise kept things simple with two groundouts and a strikeout.

Offense

It's safe to say that the Astros offense has more than struggled in the first two games of this series, and tonight's game started the same way. The only difference was that they were no longer facing Matt Moore or David Price. The Astros were able to break their scoreless streak against the Rays thanks to Chris Carter.

Carter hit the first of two home runs in the second to tie the game at one. That was all the Astros would get until the seventh when Carter struck once again with two on this time around to give the Astros a 4-1 lead. Brett Wallace gets the credit for getting the rally started with a lead off double to left. Wallace hustled his way to second and barely beat the throw.

In conclusion, can't say enough about Chris Carter tonight. The Astros offense had been scuffling and hopefully this will help get things going again. The Astros will try to even the four game series against the Rays in the day game tomorrow as they go to battle with Jordan Lyles on the mound.

Norris takes the mound today hoping to end Astros' five game slide.

Tampa Bay at Houston, 7:10 pm (CT)

Pitching Match

RHP <strike>Fausto Carmona </strike> Roberto Hernández (4-9 / 4.98 ERA / 1.33 WHIP) vs. RHP Bud Norris ( 5-7 / 3.35 ERA / 1.37 WHIP)

Preview

Thus far in the four game series with Tampa Bay, the Astros have been out scored 20-0. Houston have had a total of six hits over 56 at-bats (.107). Nine batters in total have reached first this series, and all have been strained.

The one shinning light for the Astros, on the mound for the Rays is Roberto Hernández. Hernández is another of the Ray's reclamation project, picked up from the scrapheap after a disastrous 2012 season. The Rays right-hander is currently on a three game losing streak, giving up 12 earned runs over 20 2/3 innings. Hernández did have a strong outing his last start, threes runs over eight innings against the Blue Jays. He will work his a hard sinker and change-up combination to keep the Astros off the board. Carlos Pena is back in the lineup today and is 1-for-10 against Hernández with two RBI.

Bud Norris will take the ball for the Astros, hoping to stop Houston's five game losing streak. Norris has quietly continued to lead the Astros staff with 11 quality starts in his past 13 outings. He has posted a 2.42 ERA over over his last eight starts. Unfortunately, Norris has the fifth lowest run-support average of any pitcher in the major leagues (2.94). James Loney has been a Norris-killer, batting .500 in 14 at-bats.

"Awful, awful, and a taste of more awful" - food critic William Peebles

Too much chocolate can be a bad thing. This I discovered after indulging in too many of last night's chocolate rocks when I really started getting a sickly feeling to my stomach. So instead of chocolate today, I opted for soup in hopes that it would be easier on my stomach. Well, after taking my first bite, I determined it was a pretty awful soup. So I look at the back of the can to see which ingredients are listed and I was shocked that the FDA would allow these things in a food product, much less a soup:

"Natural and Artificial Flavors: David Price Medley (Mixture of 10-Strikeout Spice, 70-pitch mix, No-walk stalks), Freshly Picked-off Paredes, 3-run sun dip from Oberholtzer farms, 4 single dingles, Al0ve Ionized Water, Less is Elmore brand off-base anticaking agent, Errant Throw Laxative: Causes you to have the runs (by Paredes Pharmaceuticals), and Red 40 Lake"

I mean, who thought these ingredients were a good idea? I'm pretty sure the Red 40 Lake was the only there to brighten up the soup, to prevent it from looking too grim. But is no one concerned about the potential carcinogenic properties of Red 40 Lake? Come on FDA, ban that already.

I could also see that the sorry soup was Tomato-and-not-beyond-1st based. I would have preferred something more brinier for the soup base. Perhaps chicken stock. But still, I'm not confident that would have made it taste any better.

My recommendation is to just not buy that stuff. Find something healthier that gets all four of your bases covered. And get some exercise. Springer out of bed in the morning and get a morning jog. If we all do this, Villar all going to be in excellent health. But it's likely some won't get on the program.

As for me, I'll hatch off nearly 5 trillion calories by skipping the Single 2000-Pounder burger from the Redhawks Cafe and instead opting for a caught-stealing salad with a Feisty Umpire vinaigrette.
