Jordan Lyles was stellar tonight limiting the Mariners to three hits and no runs in seven innings while striking out ten, and the offense scored six times in the ninth to give the Astros a 6-1 victory.

What a game. If pitching is your thing, and your an Astros fan then this was the game for you. Jordan Lyles had arguably the best game of his major league career thus far. His final line for the night, seven innings pitched, ZERO earned runs, two walks, and double digit (10) strikeouts. This was his ninth start of the season, and so far he's only allowed more than three earned runs in one of those starts. In short, he's been pretty impressive this season, and hopefully that can continue.

As for the game, pitching was the name of the game tonight. Jordan Lyles and Jeremy Bonderman matched zero's for seven innings tonight, and Bonderman was able to put up one extra zero in the eight for good measure.

Astros fans looked like they were headed for another heartache of a loss tonight as Hector Ambriz, Travis Blackley, and Paul Clemens combined to allow two hits and a run in the eighth inning. It appeared as though the offense failed to show up again and that the Astros were destined for a 1-0 loss.

However, something surprising happened in the top of the ninth, and the Astros bats came alive and put up a six spot to take a 6-1 lead. How exactly did that happen? It started with a Castro single, which was followed by a Martinez single. Carlos Corporan then bunted the two into scoring position which opened up first base allowing Tom Wilhelmsen to intentionally walk Pena to load the bases. Chris Carter then followed with a two-run double to give the Astros the lead 2-1. The Mariners then decided to intentionally walk Matt Dominguez. Barnes followed that IBB with a single to score Pena and give he Astros a 3-1 lead. Jose Altuve followed up that with a single of his own to drive in two and make it 5-1. Brandon Barnes later scored in the inning to bring the game to 6-1 where it would stay.

Paul Clemens, who was brought in to record the last out of the eighth, stayed in to close it out in the ninth.

The Astros finally get an off day tomorrow before starting a series with the Chicago White Sox and Chris Sale over the weekend.

RHP Jordan Lyles (3-1/ 4.03 ERA / 1.52 WHIP) vs. RHP Jeremy Bonderman (1-1 / 6.75 ERA / 1.31 WHIP)

Preview

The Astros have traded in their six-game winning streak at the beginning of June, for a six-game losing streak today. Fortunately for the Astros, they have the right man for the job of ending that slide. Jordan Lyles has been masterful since his call up at the beginning of May. If you were to shave off Lyles only outing this year where he gave up more then three runs in a start (May 12 vs. Texas, 4 IP 8 ERs), his ERA would be 2.65. In the month of June alone, his ERA is 2.84. Michael Morse is 2-for-7 against Lyles, with a solo homerun. With the roll that Lyles is on, and the pitcher-friendly Safeco at his back - you don't know what might happen?

If you thought Aaron Harang was blast from the past, get a load of Jeremy Bonderman. A series of injuries and poor performances kept the right-hander out of major league baseball since 2010. Bonderman's return is a success in itself after getting his first win in his last start against the Yankees - he pitched six innings of one-run baseball. It was Bonderman's first win since September 8, 2010. Ronny Cedeno (.333) and Trevor Crowe (.250) both previous had at-bats against Bonderman in the past five seasons.

I Don't Want To Talk About It.

"No, but seriously. There are people out there, up at midnight, who want to know how the Astros did."

I DON'T WANT to talk about IT

"Yeah, but what about that Aaron Harang guy? He nearly threw a no-hitter against Houston. Complete game two-hitter. Why couldn't the Astros hit him? They need your insight."

Is this team getting home any time soon?

Is this the same team that had a winning streak recently?

Why do I feel like we're spiraling back into the horrible months of June and July last year, when wins were like desert oases, so few and far between, they seemed like mirages.

Why am I still talking about this??

Can we just cut to Bo Porter yelling at the team some more for those defensive miscues? Seriously, ya'll. They're killing ME, and I'm only listening to the game on the radio.

Let's just go to bed. Maybe tomorrow's game will be better.

Sigh.

Astros send ace to the mound in hopes of ending slide.

Houston at Seattle, 9:10 PM CT
TV: CSN Houston
Radio: KBME 790 AM
Mariners SBNation Blog: Lookout Landing

Pitching Match

RHP Bud Norris (5-5/ 3.43 ERA / 1.47 WHIP) vs. RHP Aaron Harang (2-6 / 6.70 ERA / 1.40 WHIP)

Preview

Bud Norris may be auditioning his services for another team today, but his first priority is to end the Astros' five game loosing streak. Since the start of April (minus a seven-run outing to the Rangers) has an ERA of 1.76 over his six of seven starts. In Norris' last start against Seattle, he out dueled Hisashi Iwakuma in a 3-2 Astros win. Norris scattered 8 hits - Michael Morse and Justin Smoak both collected two hits off Norris in the one start.

The longtime NL Central foe, Aaron Harang also finds himself in the AL West this season. Things have not gone well fo Harang in Seattle thus far. In his last start against the Yankees, Haranag lasted only 2 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on eight hits - including back-to-back homeruns by Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira. The spacious Safeco Field hides some of Harang's faults with high fly ball rate (.55 GO/FO). It has resulted in a ERA that is two runs lower at home (5.68 ERA) then on the road (7.97 ERA). Ronny Cedeno 5-for-11 lifetime against Harang with a home run and six RBIs.

Mistakes cost Astros in yet another offense-starved loss on this road trip.

If Bo Porter was upset about last Saturday's loss to the Royals, I imagine he's going to be just as steamed about this one. While the Astros only lost by a run, there were a number of plays that sunk this ship. Let's run through them briefly:

Triunfel's rundown that allowed Kyle Seager to get to second. Not a huge deal, but since Seager scored the go-ahead run eventually, it kinda was.

The error by Dominguez/Carter's non-picking self. Directly led to a run. Ugh.

Jose Altuve misses a ball on a flip to second. As KevinBassStache said on Twitter, when Jose Altuve looks like he forgot how to play baseball, things are bad.

Things looked okay on the surface. Dallas Keuchel only allowed one run over six innings. Wade LeBlanc gave up an unearned run of his own, but other than that pitched well. Jose Veras got into a little bit of trouble in the eighth, but pitched well in his first appearance in five games.

No, the part of this team that continues to struggle is the offense. Houston had chances, like when Jose Altuve doubled to center field or Carlos Pena legged out a leadoff double of his own. But, the rest of the offense was unable to drive in runs.

Two more games, then Houston comes back or a little bit of time. It may be that this team needs to be home for a few series to get this road trip out of their system.
