Four Astros Selected to All-Stars

No starting pitchers selected. Yuli Gurriel and Yordan Alvarez barely miss the final cut.

MLB: Game Two-Houston Astros at Detroit Tigers Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Four Astros made the All-Stars in 2021, all as reserves. They are:

Carlos Correa, SS

Jose Altuve, 2B

Michael Brantley, OF

Ryan Pressly, RP

Perhaps the most controversial ommission is Yuli Gurriel, who was beaten out by the Angels’ Jared Walsh. Although Gurriel has the edge in fWAR by a small margin, 2.3 to 2.2, and has the edge in overall hitting, wRC+, 147 -143, Walsh has twice as many home runs, 20 - 10, the stat that tends to have an outsize impact on decisions such as All-Stars or MVP.

Among DH’s Alvarez’ wRC+ was third, behind selectees Shohei Ohtani (180), and Nelson Cruz, (154). Alvarez hit 149. J. D. Martinez was also selected ahead of Alvarez despite a lower wRC+ of 145, but Martinez has larger counting numbers, 17 homers to 14, and 56 RBI to 51.

It is the second time to the All-Star game for Ryan Pressly and Carlos Correa. It is Jose Altuve's seventh selection and Brantley’s fifth selection.

Here’s the starting lineups.
