A Spring Training battle of aces

MLB: ALCS-Tampa Bay Rays at Houston Astros Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

First, the bad news.

We’ve all heard by now that the inning-eating ace of the Astros rotation, Framber Valdez, suffered a fractured index finger. This will probably keep him out until the All-Star break...AT BEST.

And eight pitchers are under COVID quarantine, including one of the ostensible rotation replacements for Valdez, rookie Luis Garcia.

And yesterday it was revealed that the Astros’ top pitching prospect and another ostensible replacement for Valdez, Forrest Whitley, is suffering arm discomfort.

But for today we have a fun Spring Training matchup. Two superstar pitchers start the game for the Mets and Astros, Jacob DeGrom, and Zack Greinke. It will be Greinke’s Spring Training debut.

We’ll also get to see a few other Astros mainstays. Jose Altuve, Kyle Tucker, Yuli Gurriel, and Martin Maldonado all start as well.

Here’s the lineup.

Jose Siri...........................CF

Jose Altuve......................2B

Kyle Tucker......................RF

Yuli Gurriel......................1B

Martin Maldonado..........C

Abraham Toro.................3B

Grae Kessinger...............SS

Jake Meyers....................LF

Bryan De La Cruz...........DH

Still no Alex Bregman or Yordan Alvarez this Spring.

The game will be broadcast live on KBME 790 AM radio or 94.5 HD-2.

(editor’s note, The Astros have just signed Jake Odorizzi to a two-year contract)
