The Astros have an established, veteran team at the core. We know the core. The infield is set: Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve, Yuli Gurriel. The starting outfield is set: Michael Brantley, Kyle Tucker, Myles Straw. The two catchers are set: Martin Maldonado and Jason Castro.
And we can be certain the following pitchers will be participating in Opening Day celebrations: Zack Greinke, Lance McCullers, Jose Urquidy, Cristian Javier, Jake Odorizzi, Ryan Pressly, Ryne Stanek, and Joe Smith.
Maybe I left some out. But here are 17 players that I think everyone can agree are set. That leaves nine more to fill out a 26 man roster.
To properly pick the remaining nine, the first thing you have to do is decide whether you think the Astros are going with 12 or 13 pitchers. Get that wrong and your roster can’t be right.
Your task: Correctly pick the Astros’ 26-man roster. Winner(s) gets an article announcing his or her high-level baseball genius. Your name will be included at the beginning of the article where the Astros announce their roster.
