The Mariners are three games behind the Astros for the all-important second place in the AL West. They have dreams of a sweep, catching the Astros in the standings, and hoping the Stros continue their slide in Arlington.
For the Astros the magic number is three. Any combination of three wins or three Mariner losses and the Astros are in. With just one win for the Astros in Seattle it’s all but over for the Mariners. The Astros just need to avoid a sweep.
Lance McCullers is going for the Astros tonight in his second start since coming off IL. In his last start against Oakland he went six innings and allowed only one run. He also seemed to have the velocity on his fastball that had been missing before his IL stint.
The Mariners send Marco Gonzalez to the mound against McCullers. After a rough start to the season Gonzalez has righted the ship, he’s 6-2, with a 3.49 ERA.
Here’s the Astros lineup. The hottest hitter on the team, George Springer, is not in the lineup.
