It’s a McCullers start, and that’s always interesting. If he brings his best stuff, he’s almost unhittable. On other days not so much. He has a 5.47 ERA this year, but half of his earned runs ( 8 ) came in one inning. In his last 12+ innings pitched he has only allowed two runs and four hits. Coming off Tommy John surgery it is not surprising to see McCullers struggling to find consistency. And that’s why it’s always interesting to watch a Mccullers game.
His opponent will be Garrett Richards, who will face the Stros with a 3.45 ERA this season, and a career 2.99 ERA against the Astros.
The Padres are rebuilding, but have a solid foundation, including one of the best players in baseball, Fernando Tatis, hitting .312 with 12 homers. Don’t forget the always dangerous Manny Machado, and one of baseball’s best rookies, shortstop Jake Cronenworth.
The Astros come in to SD with a 15-10 record. The up and coming Padres sport a 15-12 mark.
