Despite outhitting the Cody Blue and Gold eight to five, despite three errors by the Cody team, and despite having a leadoff hitters on base in six of the nine innings, the Bilbos Brick Reds could only score one run and lost 2-1 to end their run for the Astros dream team championship.
It was a game of missed opportunities for the Brick Red. In the third inning the Astros had runners on second and third with no outs. However, the top of the order, Jose Altuve, Carl Everett, and George Springer, left the runners stranded.
In the eighth the Astros started the inning with runners on first and second but again couldn’t convert. But the real heartbreak came in the top of the ninth. Billy Doran led off with a double off Dave Smith, followed by a Miguel Tejada single, putting runners on the corners with no outs,
This time, the Brick Red playoff MVP, Jose Altuve, came through with a two-out single, scoring Doran and leaving Tejada at second. Score: Cody 2, Bilbos 1. With a chance to tie the score with a base hit, Everett seemed to come through, hitting a line drive single.
Tejada, seeing extra innings, was heading home from the crack of the bat. Big mistake. He was thrown out by a mile at home, ending the game and the Bilbos hope for championship glory.
Cody’s Blue and Golds scored their runs on two solo homers, one by Carlos Correa off Roger Clemens in the second, and the other by Moises Alou off Shane Reynolds in the eighth.
Dallas Keuchel recorded the win. Roger Clemens was the loser. Dave Smith got the save.
Hats off to the Cody Blue and Golds. After losing game one and landing in the losers’ bracket, they have roared back with two straight wins and are now in the thick of the championship race.
Here is the box score and current brackets.
