After a somewhat slow week we saw the departure of yet another Astro pitcher with Will Harris signing a 3-year deal with the Nationals. I’m going to be honest with y’all, losing Will Harris hurt more than Gerrit Cole for me. I never really expected Cole to stay so when he signed with the (ugh) Yankees, it was kind of par for the course for me. But I felt like there was a bit of a chance with Harris. I also got to watch him really grow into his role for the better part of 5 seasons as opposed to the 2 of Cole.

It was also disappointing because the reports are that the Astros more or less refused to seriously bid on Harris. I’m not in the camp that Crane needs to break the bank after doling out some big-money contracts the past few seasons, which is why I understand why he wasn’t a serious contender for Cole. But a match for Harris’ new contract could have cost around an additional $1.5 million in the luxury tax and wouldn’t have been a burden for signing new free agents in 2021. I know, easy to say when it’s not my money, but there it is.

Anyways, on to the potluck. As per usual, we welcome any and all baseball-related discussion, so feel free to bring new links and questions to the comments section, and let’s get cooking.

  1. Which is worse, losing Gerrit Cole in the rotation or Will Harris in the bullpen?
  2. Who’s the best option on the farm to replace Harris?
  3. Any baseball-related New Year’s resolution?
