How many rookies have debuted for the Astros this year? Positional players: Myles Straw, Garret Stubbs, Jack Mayfield, Yordan Alvarez. Pitchers: Corbin Martin, Cy Sneed. A bunch of other rookies who have tasted their tea in prior years have been up and down as well.
And now, the new next best hope as fifth starter, Jose Urquidy arrives, replacing Brad Peacock in the rotation, who went on the ten day IL. In 33 innings at AAA Round Rock, Urquidy has a 4.09 ERA, with 40 strikeouts and an even 1.00 WHIP.
Urquidy was placed on the 40-man roster, and to make room on the 25 man roster, Reymin Guduan was optioned to Round Rock.
BIG NEWS OF THE DAY: In order to make room for Urquidy on the 40 man roster, A. J. Reed was designated for assignment. This means he will have to be traded, released or outrighted to the Minors within seven days if he passes through waivers.
Looks like we’ve seen the last of the once Great Hope at first base, A. J. Reed, in the Astros organization.
Today Urquidy faces German Marquez, (8-3, 4.29 ERA).
