Cionel Perez was promoted to the 25 man Astros roster this morning, and will be available to pitch this evening against the Orioles. In a related move, Brady Rodgers was optioned back to AAA Round Rock.
This will be Perez’ second stint with the Astros. Last season in 11.1 innings Perez pitched eight games without decision, with a 3.97 ERA. This year at Round Rock his ERA is 6.44 with an 0-1 record.
One consideration in the Perez’ call-up is the overuse of the bullpen currently. The Astros just completed a fourteen inning game yesterday and have used all available relief pitchers extensively in the last two days.
Rodgers, once Minor League Player of the year in 2016, has been extremely ineffective in the few chances he has had in his short stint in the Big Leagues this year. In five innings pitched he has a 16.20 ERA. In his only other call-up in 2016 his ERA was 15.12.
