One of the best days of the year for baseball. It’s Memorial Day! At 3:00 we are all encouraged to take a moment of silence for those who have sacrificed everything for our country and our freedom.
But at 1:10 we play ball. Our bitter National League former rivals, the first place Chicago Cubs, come a callin to Minute Maid, the first time since 2016. They send Cole Hamels to the mound, having a good season thus far, at 4-0, 3.38 ERA.
The Astros, who took two out of three from the Red Sox, but split their recent home series with the White Sox, send their own Cole to the mound, the Cole Train, Gerrit Cole. Gerrit is 4-5 on the year, with a disappointing 4.11 ERA, but peripherals suggest he is really pitching much better than that overall. His 100 strikeouts lead the league.
Welcome Jack Mayfield to the Major Leagues. He was activated today from Round Rock and will play in the starting lineup at second base. Go Jack.
