Astros Finally Set ALDS Roster

Peacock and Abreu Left of the ALDS Roster

MLB: Houston Astros at Los Angeles Angels Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

It is game day for the Houston Astros. Fans have been given days to compare the Rays vs. Astros official lineups, checks notes, minutes. With first pitch several hours away, the Astros drop their 25-roster for the ALDS. Most of the roster was set before today’s news, but there were some question marks in the bullpen. Now we know.

According to Jake Kaplan, the notable players left off the ALDS roster were right-handed relievers Brad Peacock and Bryan Abreu. The Astros weren’t too confident that Peacock was ready for the first round. Instead, they will have him throw a bullpen during the ALDS and determine if he’s available for the ALCS should they advance.

Despite popular opinion, Wade Miley makes the ALDS roster as the lone left-handed pitcher on the roster. AJ Hinch is not likely to set the fourth starter until closer to Game 4 to see how the first three games play out. Could Miley be the lefty specialist against tough left-handed hitters? He alluded that he is open to pitching out of the bullpen.

As expected, Kyle Tucker makes the ALDS roster over Abraham Toro, meaning the Astros are confident that Carlos Correa is healthy. They always have Aledmys Diaz and Myles Straw available to play shortstop as well. Maybe Alex Bregman can move over to shortstop as well should something happen to Carlos Correa.

These players are making their first MLB playoff roster.

Kyle Tucker

Jose Urquidy

Aledmys Diaz

Alvarez could be the driving factor behind the Astros success in the playoffs in 2019. Having Tucker on the bench gives Hinch an option as a left-handed pinch hitter should Martin Maldonado comes up with runners on base late in a game. Urquidy could get the start, if necessary, in Game 4 which could be the clincher. Surprisingly, this will be Diaz’s first playoff appearance, but he’s been playing for the Blue Jays and Cardinals during down years.

This is the roster set up to battle the Rays during the ALDS. About to head up to the ballpark to Root Root for the Astros to Take It Back! I’ve got the Astros in 4, losing in Game 3 at Tropicana Field. When Geoff Blum joined Locked On Astros, he said Astros in 3! Go Stros, and I will record a podcast after each postseason game.
