This is why they got him. It wasn’t pristine, but it got the job done.

Greinke that is, and the job?Win a World Series game.

No, he didn’t get the official win. He only pitched 4.2 innings, needing five for an official win. But he held the hot Nats bats to one run, making Zack Greinke the most effective World Series pitcher for the Astros so far.

Sure, he gave up seven hits and three walks. He didn’t get the win, Who cares? He put the Astros in position to win Game 3 of the World Series, and suddenly a miracle Astros comeback in the World Series, down only 2-1, doesn’t seem like an impossible dream.

The Astros offensive production came in dribbles tonight, but it was enough. In the second inning the Astros scored one after Carlos Correa doubled, and then scored on a Josh Reddick bloop single,

In the third Jose Altuve led off with a double, but advanced to third on a fielding error by left fielder Juan Soto. He scored on an infield single by Michael Brantley,

The fifth inning looked a lot like the third, with Altuve opening the action with a lead-off double, and scoring again on a Brantley single.

The sixth inning belonged to Robinson Chirinos, who homered off the foul pole in left field.

There may be signs of life in the Astros lineup. They managed 11 hits, and were 4-10 with runners in scoring position. All the starters were involved in the production, except one, Alex Bregman,, who remains mired in his slump.

Greinke wasn’t the only clutch pitcher tonight. Josh James finished the fifth inning with a strikeout on a 3-2 count.

Brad Peacock faced three batters but walked two, necessitating an early entrance for Will Harris, who remains the true ace of the bullpen. He got five outs, handing the ball to Joe Smith, who pitched a scoreless eighth, who then yielded to Roberto Osuna, who closed the game and got the save.

Saturday’s game is scheduled as a bullpen game, with Jose Urquidy opening for the Astros.

He faces Washington’s third ace, Patrick Corbin.

Game time 8:07 CDT.
