Astros rumored to have signed Wade Miley

New, 130 comments

The Astros are rumored to have signed Wade Miley for a 1-year 4.5 Million dollar contract.

Miley has struggled through injuries over the past few years but had a bit of a renaissance last year pitching to a 5-2 record with a 2.57 ERA. Admittedly, the advanced stats didn’t support that type of production.

I’m personally perplexed in regards to this signing from an analytical standpoint, and will do a full analysis to see what I’m missing.

The agreement reportedly contains incentives for both Starting and Relief Pitching, so flexibility may have been key.

Fangraphs did an article highlighting pitchers who may benefit from a change in pitching repertoire, here’s what they had to say on Miley:

“The Brewers are on a roll. The 2017 version of Miley screamed for a pitch mix adjustment and the Brewers pulled it off. They had him throw his sinker (5% SwStr%) and four-seam (5% SwStr%) less and go with his cutter (12% SwStr%).

The only possibility for growth is completely dropping the sinker and four-seamer”

Let’s get the conversation going, let us know your thoughts on the signing.
