Originally reported by Robert Murray of the Athletic and now confirmed by Brian McTaggart, the Astros will place George Springer on the 10-day DL and recall Derek Fisher from AAA.
The move comes after Springer injured his thumb sliding into 2nd base in yesterday’s game. The good news is that McTaggart is reporting the injury as a thumb sprain and not a UCL one, which would have been much worse. The club is expecting him to be out for just a couple of weeks.
George joins Altuve, Correa, Devo, McCann, and McCullers on the DL, though it’s looking likely that Correa could return in the near future. Besides that, the timing is particular bad as George had been heating up at the plate after a prolonged slump heading into the All-Star Break.
Derek Fisher will make his return to the big league club after a somewhat unimpressive start to the 2018 season in Houston. He would slash a meager .176/.222/.419, showing power when he connected, but had issues catching up to major league pitching. As is often the case, he’s been more impressive at the AAA level, but hasn’t been quite as effective as he was last year.
