Astros Roster Move: Kyle Tucker Called Up, Jake Marisnick Optioned

The highly touted prospect will get his chance at the highest level

Brian McTaggart has confirmed that Kyle Tucker is being called up from AAA Fresno today. Jake Marisnick will be optioned back to the Grizzlies to make room on the 25 man roster.

Selected in the 2015 draft, Tucker is the Astros’ top prospect and was the No. 5 overall prospect at the beginning of the season according to MLB Pipeline. He made a strong case to join the Opening Day roster out of spring training before being optioned for more seasoning. Since then he’s proven he can handle the game at that level, slashing .306/.371/.520 with 14 home runs and 38 walks in 370 PAs.

In a corresponding move, Jake Marisnick has been sent back down to make room on the 25 man roster for Tucker.

Marisnick had an absolutely awful start to the season, but had been looking much more controlled at the plate recently. Slashing only .195/.235/.359 in 2018, stellar defense has been Jake’s calling card more than his bat. Unfortunately for Marisnick, it appears as though management is higher on Kemp’s on-base ability than they are on Jake’s defense at the moment.

It is unclear what future plans are for Marisnick, and will probably depend on how Tucker handles himself at the MLB level while he gets his chance.
