It’s gonna be hard to keep this young man down on the farm.
MLB’s No. 51 prospect, and the Astros’ #3, Cuban born Yordan Alvarez, was promoted to AAA Fresno today. The just turned 21 year old slugger was slashing .325/.389/.615 for AA Corpus Christi with 12 home runs, and in his last 16 games he was even more precocious, slashing .371/.418/.742.
Alvarez is scheduled to play in the Future’s Game on July 15th, his second appearance. He was acquired in the trade that sent Josh Fields to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yeah that Josh Fields, the one the Stros bombed in Game 2 of the World Series.
Currently a left fielder/ first baseman, he will have to share playing time in the outfield with Kyle Tucker, Derek Fisher, and Myles Straw, or at first base with A.J. Reed and J.D. Davis. Some speculation exists at the time of this writing if more roster moves are forthcoming. In a related move Jon Kemmer’s contract was sold to the Minnesota Twins.
But play he will, at 6-foot 5, 225 pounds he has the rare combination of size, power and athleticism that screams BIG LEAGUES.
