Joe Smith has been activated from the DL by the Astros and is available out of the pen for the first time since June 6th.

Smith had a rocky start to his Astros tenure, but had been trending upward in his most recent appearances. He had only allowed two earned runs over his final 10.1 IP before landing on the DL with right elbow issues. He made two rehab appearances with the Hooks where he allowed 4 hits in 2 IP, but he didn’t allow a run in either outing.

AJ Reed was optioned to Fresno yesterday in anticipation of the move.

Reed didn’t get a chance to do much at the plate while he was here. He only appeared in one game where he started at 1st, went hitless with one strikeout, and failed to pick a ground ball at first from Marwin. Though you can’t judge Reed from that one game, it’s hard to see him getting too many more chances at the top level for Houston barring an injury.
