Astros Roster Move: Ken Giles Optioned, Cionel Perez Recalled

Giles heads to Fresno as Perez gets another chance to make his debut

MLB: Oakland Athletics at Houston Astros Shanna Lockwood-USA TODAY Sports

The Astros have announced that Ken Giles has been optioned to AAA Fresno while LHP Cionel Perez has been recalled to take has place on the roster.

Giles has had several noteable meltdowns late in games this season, all coming in non-save opportunities. He has also had emotional moments that have generated unfortunate headlines including punching himself in the face and using questionable language, possibly directed at Hinch, when being pulled from the game last night. Giles will get a chance to collect himself in Fresno, his first time there, and work on performing consistently while controlling his emotions. After last night’s game Giles has a 4.99 ERA in 30.2 IP to go with a 9.10 K/9 and 0.88 BB/9.

Meanwhile, Cionel Perez will return to the club for a second time after briefly keeping a seat warm while Gurriel was on paternity leave and Correa went to the DL. He warmed up to possibly enter a game during the Tampa series, but ultimately returned to Corpus without logging his MLB debut. It is likely he will see action soon as it seems the Astros are eager to see what he can do at the major league level. His most recent appearance was a 4 inning save out of the pen this past Sunday, where he would give up just 2 hits and 0 runs while striking out 8.
