Astros Roster Move: Gerrit Cole to Bereavement List, Jake Marisnick Recalled

Cole will spend at least three days away from the team as Jake returns to Houston

The Astros have placed Gerrit Cole on the bereavement list, effective today, and recalled Jake Marisnick from AAA Fresno.

The reason for Cole’s placement on the list is not immediately clear. He must spend a minimum of three days, no more than seven, before he can return to the team. Cole’s most recent start was just yesterday, where he struck out 11 A’s across 6 scoreless frames. He is penciled in for one more start before the break, against the Tigers on Saturday.

Jake will get the callback after just three days at the minor league level. He did not play in a game while he was with the Grizzlies. Calling up another bat as opposed to a pitcher might suggest that the Astros don’t expect Cole to be gone a full turn through the rotation, or are comfortable using either McHugh or Peacock for a spot start.

Jake does not have to spend the requisite ten days in the minors due to his recall being a corresponding move with placing Cole on bereavement.
