Yuli Gurriel has been placed on paternity leave and will probably miss the next 3 games as he welcomes his new child. Yuli has been one of the Astros’ best hitters in clutch situations and is leading the league in average with runners in scoring position.
In a corresponding move, the Astros have recalled AJ Reed from AAA Fresno. Reed is having a good season for the Grizzlies, slashing .266/.379/.536 in Fresno, but has been thoroughly blocked at the MLB level. His bat has been a little chilly in the last week or so, but he has continued to get on base with walks.
Reed may get a start or two, but his role is probably more in line as infield depth or late inning pinch hitter a la JD Davis. He will almost definitely not be sticking around as both Yuli and Joe Smith should be returning to the active roster within the next few days and Reed and White are the most likely candidates for demotion.
