GameThread for Houston Astros at Arizona Diamondbacks, May 5, 2018 7:10 PM CDT

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Gerrit Cole pitched one of the greatest games in Houston Astros history yesterday, notching a one-hit shutout on the Arizona Diamondbacks, while striking out 16, a career high, and second all-time among all Astros pitchers. ESPN gave his performance a perfect 100 gamescore rating, 5 points better than this season's second best, Sean Manaea's no-hitter.

Meanwhile the bats broke out, scoring eight runs on 14 hits. But can they keep the same kind of pressure on today's pitcher, the D-Back's ace, Zack Greinke, pitching a little below his normal standards so far this year at 3-2, 4.50 ERA, but still Zack Greinke.

The Astros send out "5th" starter (he-he) Charlie Morton (4-0, 1.72 ERA), who, according to the ESPN Cy Predictor, is the 5th most likely candidate for the Cy Young award in the AL, just behind Gerrit Cole, both of whom trail front runner Justin Verlander, who pitches tomorrow. Almost gotta pity the poor D-Backs.
