Justin Verlander has proven to be a valuable asset for the Astros in his first four starts. He continued his streak of excellent pitching with seven scoreless innings on Friday.
The Astros got enough offense to help Verlander from Yuli Gurriel. After six scoreless innings, Gurriel connected with a Yusmeiro Petit 3-1 fastball in the seventh. Gurriel’s hit landed on the left-center field concourse, sending Astros fans into a frenzy. Gurriel had a nice bat flip for good measure.
One of the other few highlights for the Astros was a nifty play by Jose Altuve in the second inning, running down a Brandon Phillips popup between Josh Reddick and Gurriel in foul territory.
Chris Devenski collected his 23rd hold of the season and Ken Giles closed the door with 33 save of the season.
The Astros turned a 4-6-5-6 double play in the in 9th inning, catching Ben Revere in a run down.
The Angels had only two hits in the game and Houston had the only three. But the Astros were the only one with a home run so that is what counts.
