The Houston Astros have been in charge in the American League West standings since game No. 11 on April 14. The Astros took the division lead and never looked back, at times leading the division by double digits.

It may have taken longer than expected to win the division crown but the Astros still reach that mark in the fewest games in franchise history.

The Astros defeated the Seattle Mariners 7-1 to eliminate the Angels from the AL West race and earn the franchise's first-ever American League West Division Champion. It is the seventh division title and the 10th playoff berth in 55-plus years.

The Astros are the fourth team to punch their ticket to the playoffs, joining the Washington Nationals (NL West), Cleveland Indians (AL Central), and the Los Angeles Dodgers (playoff birth outright).

It is the second playoff berth in three seasons for the current core of Astros, Houston went to the playoffs in 2015 as a Wild Card team.

With the AL West title secured, the Astros now turn their focus to the best record in the AL. Houston (91-58) currently sits 1 12 games behind the Indians (93-57).
