Astros Acquiring Cameron Maybin from Angels

Rosenthal, Tags report trade on waiver deadline day

MLB: Houston Astros at Los Angeles Angels Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Astros acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin off from the Los Angeles Angels.

Maybin, 30, is tied for the league lead in steals (with Jose Altuve) at 29. He's hit .235/.333/.361 in 93 games this season, posting a 1.3 WAR for Los Angeles. Maybin has previously played for Detroit, Florida, Atlanta and San Diego and this was his first season with the Angels.

The Angels made another trade this afternoon to acquire Justin Upton from Detroit, which makes Maybin expendable. Don't expect Maybin to start regularly in Houston - however, he can offer quality depth and speed in September, while spelling Marwin Gonzalez in the outfield and potentially step in to replace Derek Fisher for October if the team thinks the rookie's bat may not be ready for the playoffs.

Maybin has never appeared in the postseason, though this is probably an attempt to also add a base stealing threat for the playoffs off the bench.

Meanwhile, Jon Morosi is reporting the Tigers are making additional pieces, including Justin Verlander, "in play" before the 11 p.m. CST deadline tonight. Don't expect a deal to happen, but don't count out aggressiveness from Jeff Luhnow considering recent struggles from the Astros in August.
