The storylines for the Astros entering the MLB Draft are far less straightforward with each passing successful season for Houston. It’s the nature of the beast, a quality team moves further and further down the draft order.
But the brightest minds of baseball prognostication still attempt to predict draft results or at least find a ballpark for who is in the hunt to be drafted. One time possible member of the Astros front office member Keith Law has always been one the best voices to start with each passing MLB Draft.
In Law’s 2017 2.0 MLB Mock Draft, Law has the Astros drafting Oregon left-handed pitcher David Peterson. Law also picked Peterson for the Astros in his 1.0 mock.
Law also noted that the Astros would pull the trigger on Cypress high school pitcher Shane Baz and Vanderbilt outfielder Jeren Kendall if they fell.
Peterson, 21, was 11-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 15 starts in 2017 with the Ducks. He struck out 140 and walked 15 over 100 1/3 innings.
