The two teams that finished below the Texas Rangers in last year’s AL West standing begin their trek to dethrone the boys from Arlington on Monday at Minute Maid Park.
The Houston Astros will host the Seattle Mariners in the Astros’ 56th home opener in team history and the 17th home opener at Minute Maid Park. The game will start at 7:10 central time and be broadcast locally on ROOT Sports Southwest on television, 790 AM KBME on the radio, and in Spanish on La Nueva 94.1 FM. The game will be streamed online through MLB.TV — but blacked out in the Astros local market.
Dallas Keuchel will be making his third Opening Day start on Monday. He is 2-0 with a 1.28 ERA and a 0.928 WHIP in his opening day stars. Keuchel faces a fellow Cy Young award winner on the mound for the Mariners, Felix Hernandez.
Hernandez is making his 10th opening day start and ninth consecutive start on Game No. 1 for the Mariners. Hernandez is right at home on opening day with a 6-1 record with a 1.49 ERA and a 0.754 WHIP. He has struck out 68 batters in 66 1⁄3 innings.
Six Astros players will be participating in their first opening day: infielder Alex Bregman, right-handed pitcher Chris Devenski, infielder Yuli Gurriel, right-handed pitcher Jandel Gustave and right-handed pitchers Lance McCullers Jr. and Joe Musgrove.
Man, it’s great to have baseball back.
