Pitching Matchup

RHP Charlie Morton (0-0, 3.00 ERA, 1.17 WHIP) vs. LHP James Paxton (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.50 WIHP)

Preview

The Houston Astros start the season with 10 straight games and play their first road game on Monday in Seattle. Today’s game is the Mariners’ Opening Day. It’s a fair turnaround since the Mariners were the Astros’ home opener opponent this past Monday.

But unlike the Houston Opening Day, the game had the teams’ ace on the mound. Monday will have the team’s No. 3 starters, Charlie Morton and James Paxton.

Morton got off to a good start in his Astro career, where he allowed two earned runs over six innings. He struck out four and gave up two walks against the Mariners in a 5-3 win. It was Morton’s only career start against the Mariners, and thus Monday will be Morton’s first start at Safeco Field.

James Paxton shut down the Astros for six innings in his first start of the season against the Astros. He struck out five and walked one. The Candian was 1-2 with a 5.82 ERA in three starts in 2016. Paxton was 2-4 with a 3.56 ERA in nine starts at Safeco Stadium last season.

Matchup to watch: Alex Bregman vs. James Paxton

Alex Bregman is two-for-five with a double and a walk against James Paxton. George Springer is going to soon, if not already, getting nothing to see at the plate. Bregman will have to setup and start the offense against today’s starter.
