IT GOT WEIRD WHEN...
The bottom of the second inning started off normal enough, with Calos Correa flying out to center and Evan Gattis striking out, but then things got strange. Yuli Gurriel hit a ball to Ryon Healy at third base, who sat back a little too long before throwing to first, which allowed Gurriel to reach on an "infield single". Note the strategic use of quotation marks in the previous sentence. Brownie, Blummer, and I all thought that ball could have easily been ruled an error, but whatever.
After the non-error, the next two batters, Marwin Gonzalez and Teoscar Hernandez, both reached on actual errors executed by -- you guessed it -- Athletics' third baseman, Ryon Healy. Sean Manea then walked in two runs before striking out Alex Bregman to end the inning, but you can hardly blame him since the poor guy had to pitch basically an extra inning thanks to the defensive miscues.
Joe Musgrove's overall line of 3 H, 3 BB and 7 Ks over 5.1 innings looks pretty good, but he also hit Jake Smolinski TWICE and had to wiggle out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth. He got back into trouble in the sixth inning, and Luke Gregerson relieved him and induced an inning ending double play. Pat Neshek pitched the seventh and Brad Peacock closed out the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the shutout.
