Today was a very interesting day in the Astros system at multiple levels.  Let's take a look at the action.

AAA Fresno Grizzlies: WON 2-1 over the Omaha Storm Chasers (KCR)

A thrilling battle that went eleven innings in the end, this game had a really fun feel throughout.

Yulieski Gurriel made his first start in America in Left Field and went 0-5 at the plate.  It was not an entirely wasted day for him, offensively, as he reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first and scored after subsequent singles from red-hot Jon Kemmer and "SupermAAAn" Danny Worth and also hit the ball well in his next three at bats.  The BABIP Dragon just had its own plans this day, as two outfield fly balls and a line out to centerfield were the results of those plate appearances.  In his final plate appearance of the game, in the bottom of the ninth inning, he struck out.

Otherwise in the contest, Alejandro Garcia had himself a ballgame in just his fourth Triple-A appearance.  The 25-year-old Cuban went 3-5 with a trio of singles and scored the game-winning run on Colin Moran's walk-off single in the eleventh.  Danny Worth reached base four times by virtue of a pair of walks, a single, and a double - which was the only extra-base hit of the entire game.

On the bump, Cesar Valdez was excellent over his seven innings of work.  He scattered six singles and one earned run while walking none and striking out nine hitters.  Brendan McCurry, Jordan Jankowski, and Jandel Gustave combined to hurl four shutout innings with no hits allowed, four strikeouts, and only one batter reaching base - a walk by Jankowski that ever so slightly marred an otherwise-flawless bullpen performance.

AA Corpus Christi: WON 4-0 over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (KCR)

Let's go ahead and lead with the fact that Cy Sneed was utterly dominant in this game.  He allowed only a double and three singles over seven innings, walking none and fanning five.  Kevin Comer pitched brilliantly over two innings of relief, allowing three hits but striking out five of the six outs he recorded.  Ramon Laureano hit his fifth Double-A home run (fifteenth total this season), a two-run shot to left field that put the Hooks up immediately in the top of the first inning.  Mott Hyde added a sacrifice fly (scoring Conrad Gregor, who was 2-4 in this game) in the top of the fifth, and JD Davis drove in Bobby Boyd with a single in the top of the eighth.  This game was quietly a very, very nice win for the Hooks.

High-A Lancaster, Game One: LOST 12-6 to the High Desert Mavericks (TEX)

In the opener of a double-header born out of necessity thanks to serious wildfires in the Lancaster area, the JetHawks hit plenty but were roundly trounced anyway.

Kyle Tucker made his much-anticipated debut in this game in Left Field and went 2-4 with a pair of singles and a run scored, but the real story was Right Fielder Drew Ferguson.  He went 3-3 in the contest with a pair of home runs (his twelfth and thirteenth of the season, both solo shots) and a single, while Bryan Muniz added a solo shot of his own.

On the hill, Akeem Bostick and Ralph Garza each got rocked for six runs...Bostick in 3.1 innings of work, and Garza in 2.2 innings of work.  Those twelve runs came on twelve total hits thanks to the plethora of walks allowed - Bostick allowed five walks and Garza allowed a pair of walks.

High-A Lancaster, Game Two: WON 10-2 over the High Desert Mavericks (TEX)

In the second game of the makeup double-header, Kyle Tucker went cold (0-4 with one strikeout) but the team as a whole pounded out ten runs on twelve hits.  Myles Straw just refuses to stop providing massive offensive value so far following his well-deserved promotion to Lancaster.  After slashing .374/.432/.470 at Quad Cities while going 17-18 in stolen base attempts and hitting fourteen doubles and six triples in 68 games this season, Straw has already hit his first home run of the season since his promotion to Lancaster and also has a pair of doubles at High-A.  He's now 10-21 in Lancaster, which amounts to a .476 batting average so far in the small sample.

Drew Ferguson.  My goodness.  He continued putting on a show in the tail end of the double-header, following up his two-home run performance in game one with another home run (his third of the day and fourteenth on the season) and a double in four plate appearances.  He also had a walk in the game.  Bryan Muniz added another pair of hits to raise his batting average to .280 in High-A, and Christian Correa went 2-3 with a walk, a double, and his second High-A home run (third overall) at Lancaster.  Marc Wik also had a two-run home run, a single, and a walk as part of his own 2-3 day.

Jose Hernandez pitched adequately and saved the bullpen some by throwing a complete game (seven innings pitched, for this game), allowing a pair of earned runs, six hits, three walks, and striking out three.  Both runs he allowed came via solo home runs.

RK Greeneville Astros: LOST 3-2 to the Danville Braves (ATL)

Top 2016 draft pick Forrest Whitley made his sixth professional appearance (fourth start) and fired off three innings, allowing only a double and a single (which, thanks to unlucky sequencing, resulted in a single earned run) over three innings of work, striking out three and walking none.

Danville won this game, 3-2, on a walk-off hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th.
