There was a constant rumble from the Astros that Cuban infielder Yulieski Gurriel would be on the major league roster in time for Cardinals series in Houston. Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow quashed those rumors on Monday as he spoke with Houston Chronicle writer Jake Kaplan about Gurriel's status.
Gurriel will be going to Triple-A Fresno before a call-up to the majors in the future.
Yulieski Gurriel will play with Triple-A Fresno this week. He should play his first game there tomorrow, per Jeff Luhnow.— Jake Kaplan (@jakemkaplan) August 15, 2016
Luhnow says in a text message no specific timetable on Gurriel joining the Astros "but he is getting close."— Jake Kaplan (@jakemkaplan) August 15, 2016
Gurriel hasn't shown a spark with the bat yet at Double-A Corpus Christi. He is 2-for-17 during his time wit the Hooks. Gurriell is currently batting .263 (10x38) overall in the Astros minor league system with trips to the Gulf Coast League and Single-A Lancaster before joining the Hooks.
