Astros trade rumors: Cardinals, Mets eye Carlos Gomez

Could the Astros be facing Carlos Gomez in Houston next week with the Cardinals?

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Astros designated outfielder Carlos Gomez for assignment officially on Wednesday. The Astros have until next Thursday to return the Gomez to the 40-man roster, trade Gomez, release Gomez, or outright Gomez off the 40-man roster to the minor leagues.

It appears that Gomez may not reach the open market as it appears the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets are looking at Gomez to help with their issues in the outfield -- per ESPN's Mark Saxon.

Gomez, 30, was currently batting .210 (62x295) with five home runs, 29 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases. He was batting a disastrous .143 (2x14) over his last seven starts and was sat on the bench before being designated for defensive lapses in center field against the Twins on Monday.

The Cardinals need an outfielder as Matt Holliday breaking his thumb on Thursday and young players Randal Grichuk and Tommy Pham struggling.

The only items to take out of this news is the Astros may get a throw-away prospect for Gomez or we know where Gomez will go after he becomes a free agent.
