The Astros already added an uber-prospect this month with Alex Bregman's callup. Houston may add another out of necessity. MLB.com's Brian McTaggart is reporting that prospect Joe Musgrove has flown to Houston on Sunday with the possibility that the may start on Monday against the Blue Jays.
No announcement yet on Monday starter. We do know Musgrove is on his way to Houston.— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) July 31, 2016
Musgrove, 23, is one of the Astros top five prospects per The Crawfish Boxes staff and MLB.com. He destroyed Double-A this season with a 2-1 record and 2.74 ERA in 16 games (14 starts) with 57 strikeouts in 59 innings. Musgrove has leveled off a bit in Triple-A with a 5-3 record and 3.81 ERA. He is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA in three July starts with Fresno.
In an ironic twist of fate, Musgrove would be facing the team in 2011. He was traded to Houston as part of the Brandon Lyon in 2012.
The need for Musgrove comes as Doug Fister's wife is due to deliver a child soon.
Musgrove is the prime candidate to make this start as Scott Feldman was used in relief on Sunday, Chris Devenski was used for long relief on Friday, and Brady Rodgers pitched seven innings on Friday (He would also need to be added to the 40-man roster).
