Astros Prospect Report: Games of July 23, 2016

Corpus Christi walked it off, Chris Murphy threw seven strong innings, and more news from down on the farm.

Doesn't matter, still homered.

The Grizzlies couldn't make a ninth-inning comeback due to, of all things, a GIDP by Golden God Alex Bregman. (He's still perfect in every way, don't worry.) Fresno had jumped out to an early lead on a two-run double by recent call-up Chan Moon, who rejoined the team due to Jack Mayfield’s injury. Unfortunately, Brad Peacock gave up four runs, two of them on force outs, and regardless of a late Jon Kemmer homer, they couldn't regain the lead.

What a game. How many times are 14th-inning home runs in the top of the inning matched in the bottom of it? How many times does the bullpen pitch nine innings for each team? How many times do the Astros get to claim victory over the Rangers? What started out as a normal game (or however normal minor league games can be) was definitely thrown out the window when Conrad Gregor mashed a home run in the bottom of the ninth. Corpus had a chance in the 12th and squandered it, so when Luis Martes homered in the top of the 14th, the game appeared over…until Nick Tanielu led off the bottom of the inning with a solo shot. Then, in what I assume happens every time during #BaseballAfterDark, the Hooks loaded the bases on a dropped third strike, hit-by-pitch, sacrifice bunt, and intentional walk before Garrett Stubbs’s single sent everyone home happy.

Outside of a second-inning home run, Akeem Bostick did an admirable job, striking out six, walking none in all innings save the aforementioned second, and inducing five groundouts versus one flyout. Johnny Sewald collected two hits, and Jamie Ritchie, who seriously needs to get a call-up, got a hit and a walk.

Quad Cities, unlike other teams, had no sense of drama. A two-run shot in the first, as well as back-to-back homers in the third, contributed to the River Bandits leading by eight when the Hot Rods finally collected their first run. Chris Murphy, a 2015 draftee, was excellent, walking none in seven one-run innings, striking out two, and tallying an 8/2 GO/FO ratio.
