Astros sign Cuban infielder Yulieski Gurriel to a 5-year, $47.5 million deal

Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow has proven time and again that he never takes a day off. The Astros have made moves at some of the oddest times with Luhnow at the helm. Today's news isn't weird but eye-popping surprising as MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez is reporting the team has signed Cuban infielder Yulieski Gurriel to a 5-year, $47.5 million deal.

Gurriel, 32, is one the most fascinating international free agents on the market. He defected from Cuba in 2016 and was declared eligible to sign with a Major League team in June.

The Astros worked out Gourriel early this year in Florida.

Gurriel hit .305 (73x239) with 22 doubles, 11 home runs, and 30 RBIs for the Yokohama Bay Stars in Japan during the 2014 season. He batted .500 (87x174) during the 2015 Cuban National Series with Industriales de La Habana, and he hit .333 in the 2009 World Baseball Classic with 2 home runs and 6 RBI.

The signing of Gurriel raises more questions for the Astros,;he will hopefully be ready to play in the majors by season's end. So what does that mean for the multiple players already holding those spots or in line to take a spot: A.J. Reed, Luis Valbuena, Marwin Gonzalez, and Alex Bregman?
