Astros Prospect Report: Games of June 25, 2016

Francis Martes was quite filthy, Kyle Tucker hit his second homer, the GCL Astros won 10-0 in their first game, and more news from down on the farm.

In a game more reminiscent of soccer than baseball, the Grizzlies could only manage three hits, including just two in seven innings off Cody Martin, he of the 4.33 ERA. Mike Hauschild pitched well enough, allowing just one run on six hits, striking out three, walking none, and collecting an astounding 13-2 GO/FO ratio for the game. Unfortunately for him, Tacoma had one chance with RISP--and they converted it. Lately, Hauschild has been pitching extremely well, with only two ER allowed in his last four starts (26.0 innings). In only three of his starts this season has he issued more than one walk. While his K/9 is just fine at 7.3, his BB/9 is an outstanding 1.9. Brady Rodgers isn't the only Fresno starter with top-notch control.

Preston Tucker has caught fire lately. Over his last nine games, he has hit .455 with two homers and four walks versus six strikeouts. He's done particularly well in all of June, slashing .342/.382/.582 for an impressive .964 OPS. While he did walk more often in May (OBP-AVG was .o66 higher in May), his renewed ability to hit the ball hard has resulted in four doubles, three homers, and three triples for the month.

Francis Martes (W, 5-2) 7 3 0 0 1 5 0 3.65
Aaron West (S, 9) 2 3 0 0 0 1 0 2.58

In what was a pitchers' duel for the bulk of the game, Francis Martes held his ground and Corpus scored in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings to pull off the victory against the Mini-Rangers. Alex Bregman was as good as usual, hitting an RBI double, walking twice, and stealing a base. The combination of Martes and West was pretty much unbeatable, as they walked a combined 1 batter (who was later caught stealing by Pena). Martes has been unstoppable, with only a 1.80 ERA in his last eight games (to go with a 2.7 BB/9 and 8.55 K/9 over that span). He's been even better in June, with a 1.48 ERA in five games and a K/9 of 8.9.

Teoscar Hernandez has secretly put together one of the best seasons in all of the Texas League. He's slashing .330/.420/.474 in June and .303/.383/.434 on the season, and while he's struggled against lefties (.209/.314/.302 in a small sample size), he's crushed righties to the tune of .320/.397/.459 over the year. His .303 average is third in the league, tied for second in doubles and hits, fifth in OBP, and tops in the league with 29 steals, eleven more than second-place Derek Fisher. Still a little young for the league at 23, I see a promotion in the very near future.

Honestly, this game wasn't as bad as it seemed, with the Storm tacking on eight runs in the final two innings. The five homers allowed were obviously unhelpful, especially as two came in the six-run ninth, in what was an oddly quiet Lancaster game (only 8 MPH winds). Jamie Ritchie did do rather well, smashing two homers, his first since May 16. This was his first game back with the team since June 6, so he definitely got right back to business.

The River Bandits jumped on early and never relinquished the lead, with Kyle Tucker's three-run shot in the second giving QC a five-run lead. Matt Bower pitched fine, striking out four, walking two, and accumulating a GO/FO of 9-3 in five innings. Ralph Garza, a 26th-rounder from last year's draft, struck out four and walked none in two innings of work. In his last ten games, the reliever has a 2.66 ERA, 2.21 K/9, and 8.41 K/9. He has not allowed a run in June (albeit, in 13.2 innings).

Arturo Michelena had himself a game, collecting three hits, including a double, from the nine spot, raising his average to .325 on the season. He doesn't do much else--he's slashing .325/.354/.351--but as a 5'11", 165-pound player, much more time in the weight room (and at the dinner table) could provide some much-needed pop.
