Valdez Dominates in Fresno's 4-0 Win
Cesar Valdez has just twenty major league innings despite being 31 years old. In those innings he had a high walk rate and a sub-par strikeout rate. Last night he did not show that side at all. He posted a game score of 94 with his complete game shutout. His track record is definitely strange. Some poor strikeout rates. Some great ones. Some good walk rates. Some bad ones. His last two years in the Mexican League were quite nice. He's maintained that low walk-rate but his strikeout rate has dropped but he did quite well last night.

McDonald and Fisher Have Big Games in 4-3 Loss
In what was supposed to be a shortened game one of a double header, the Hooks tied it up in the sixth to force "extras". I put in quotations because it lasted nine innings. Reliever Brendan McCurry gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth. He gave up a one-out triple that would then score on a two-out line drive to center.
Chase McDonald showed off his power a bit with a home run in a three-hit performance. Derek Fisher drew three walks which is impressive considering that he had a 15% walk-rate prior to the game. He posted a 11.8% walk-rate in Lancaster last season.

Hooks Win GM-2 2-0
This was a makeup for May 15th. All the scoring came in the third inning when Alex Bregman hit his fourteenth home run of the season which was a two-run shot.
Aaron West is quietly putting together a great season as the Hooks closer. He picked up his eighth save and had a 2.47 FIP prior to last nights game. His strikeout rate is right at 22% and his walk rate is below 4% which is very solid.

Lancaster Almost Comes back in 6-4 Loss
Lancaster had a chance. They were down two in the bottom of the ninth when Trent Woodward hit his first home run for Lancaster (he previously hit some for CC this year). It was two-run shot to send it to extras. But, in the 11th, he couldn't drive in a runner from third base with two outs. Ryan Deemes would end up giving up two runs in the top of the 12th and Lancaster couldn't respond.

McCall Bright Spot in 4-1 Loss
Dexture McCall is not exactly a prospect that is normally discussed, but his name came up in the most recent podcast (thank Chris). Mostly because the Astros have drafted a few punchless first baseman in the past few years. It was the pick of 6'7" Taylor Jones that brought him up as Jones only hit two home runs this season. But, McCall is one of those that the Astros appear to be trying to retool their swings for more power. It's been a pretty big failure for Conrad Gregor.
Anyway, he hit his fourth home run of the season.
