According to GM Jeff Luhnow (In a Chron.com piece by Jose de Jesus Ortiz) the team was having trouble getting innings for all the pitchers now that the starters were going more innings.
Joe Musgrove was probably the headliner of this newest group of cuts. Musgrove was the Minor League Pitcher of the Year for the Astros in 2015. He had only pitched four innings over two games this spring, giving up two earned runs while striking out four and walking none.
As with the moves last week, most of these were expected. Musgrove, David Paulino, and Juan Minaya are on the 40-man roster, but inclusion on the MLB club to start the season was not in the plans. This should give manager A.J. Hinch more flexibility to use pitchers that should be on the team to start the regular season more innings as the spring games continue.
