So, the Astros have some pretty good defenders in the outfield.
2015 was the year that StatCast data went live with the public, and the results, which we are now able to track relatively easily, are impressive. Throughout the season and during this offseason, the data has led to myriads of articles from many sources shining a light into the dark crevices of SABR sense and tying things that we already intuitively knew (like that Jake Marisnick and Carlos Gomez are superb defenders) to cold, hard data.
Some of those articles have come from right here at TCB (check out this article and this article, both by Clack) and sometimes those pieces come from other places, and when they come from other locations and concern your Houston Astros, we try to provide at least a short piece highlighting the better and more relevant of the entries.
One such piece, which you can read here in its entirety, was published on FanGraphs and examined thirty-six instances of outfielders topping 100 miles per hour on throws from the outfield. As anyone who's watched him perform his art would be unsurprised to hear, Kevin Kiermaeir of the Tampa Bay Rays accounted for nine of the thirty-six all by his lonesome - or, in other words, a full 25% of the instances. Another 25% were provided by the duo of Carlos Gomez and Jake Marisnick, who had five and four throws, respectively, that topped 100 miles per hour. No other Major League outfielders had more than three such throws. Here's a copy of the table pulled directly from the article, posted below, but if you have a chance you should really check out the original article. It's entertaining, and it features several videos of many of the throws.
The table:
Outfielders Who Threw 100 MPH
Player No.
Kevin Kiermaier 9
Carlos Gomez 5
Jake Marisnick 4
Aaron Hicks 3
Avisail Garcia 3
Anthony Gose 2
Jackie Bradley Jr. 2
Adam Eaton 1
Billy Hamilton 1
Carlos Gonzalez 1
Dariel Alvarez 1
Leonys Martin 1
Michael Taylor 1
Starling Marte 1
Yasiel Puig 1
