Lots of good pitching performances with a few stinkers thrown in the mix.

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Straily Dominates Again

I talked about this last Saturday because Straily was good last Friday as well. But this Friday he was even better. He pitched deep into the game. He allowed just three baserunners over eight innings. His game score was an 84 making it one of the better pitching performances of the season. His FIP of 3.30 is very encouraging for his numbers to continue to improve.

Hernandez Steals Lowrie's Thunder in 9-3 Win

Teoscar Hernandez launched two home runs to steal the show away from Jed Lowrie's rehab appearance. The power has really been coming back for Teoscar as that's his fifth in as many games. The hitting and striking out is about the same though. It's good to see Lowrie back on the field and nearing his return since the team needs him. He played third which signals what we already assumed to be his new home since Carlos Correa is the every day short stop now in Houston.

Martes' Debut Shows Promise

Francis Martes made his High-A debut last night and pitched four shut out innings before running into problems in the fifth and sixth innings. He struck out the first two batters he faced looking. Six of his strikeouts came in his first four innings and four were looking. Three of his nine strikeouts were swinging. He got his old catcher Jacob Nottingham looking once, ground into a double play once, and gave up a single to him that eventually would be a run. Two of Martes' earned runs came in the sixth and actually scored after he was removed.

Paulino Wins Pitching Duel 1-0

David Paulino continues to show his ability to strikeout guys out with K/9 over nine. He allowed six baserunners and three came via the walk which is normally a concern. But given that he only had four in low-A prior to this game, it's not as bad of a concern (plus the fact it's only one game). The real encouraging part is the 9/1 GO/AO ratio. A 28.6 SO% and a 45.6% GB% is a pretty scary combination in low-A.

TC Offense Can't Keep Up in 8-6 Loss

One of the things that's helped Dean Deetz perform better this season is a big improvement in control. He's cut his walk rate in half this season but it's still a high rate. It's expected for a guy like Deetz though as he has a history of TJ surgery which some pitchers have had issues in the control area from and he's a hard thrower. The strikeout rate isn't where it needs to be though at around 17%.

Greeneville Falls in 11th 9-7

Five runs in the opening frame made this game look ugly early but they were able to climb back in and push it to extras. Lachlan Madden is the Australian pitcher signed a few years ago and pitched in DSL last year made his second appearance for Greeneville and has yet to give up a run. The 19 year old has pitched well in all of his three stops in the system. Salvador Montano pitched the most innings and is an interesting pitcher right now. He racked up a ton of strikeouts in the DSL last year as a 20 year old and jumped straight to Greeneville this year. He's still striking out guys (albeit at a lower rate) but the walk rate is a concern.

DSL Orange Wins 4-3 in 10 Innings

The Astros have been busy with small international signings. Alejandro Garcia is a 24 year old CFer on this team that reins from Cuba. Jared Cruz on the GCL team is from Australia and played for the Braves last year. There is also Jose Hernandez from Mexico on the Greeneville team.

Franklin Perez was the most exciting IFA for me last season because I love his mechanics for a young pitcher. So far he's pitched very well. He has a 34/11 SO/BB ratio in 28 innings. You can't ask for much more than that from a 17-year old.
