Astros Prospect Report: July 1st, 2015

Lots of home runs. Reed is handling High-A quite well.

Hauschild Dominates

Mike Hauschild was solid for CC early on the season thanks to a GB% over 60% and a low 3.9% walk rate. But since his promotion to AAA his strikeout rate has actually increased. Last night was one of his best starts of the year as he sat down 10 hitters via the strikeout in six innings. This was just his fourth appearance in AAA.

Reed Knocks Number 20 in 8-7 Loss

A.J. Reeds dominance of the Cal League is getting a little ridiculous. Over the last 10 games he's hitting over .350. He has three home runs and the 20th of the season came last night. The strikeout rate is under 22% and he has nearly a 15% walk-rate. That bat is ready for a challenge.

  • Kevin Comer-2 1/3 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR, 2/1 GO/AO, 26 GS-I've seen better days

Ferrell Roughed Up in 9-4 Loss

It's just a really strange stat line. Justin Ferrell gave up eight runs and only two being earned. Thats odd. But, hey Jason Martin continues to be impressive at the plate. His BA is near .300 and he has five home runs. He has a walk-rate around 11% and strikeout rate below 20%. All around his game is looking very strong.

  • Justin Ferrell-4 2/3 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 2 HR, 5/3 GO/AO, 33 GS
  • Joshua James-4 1/3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO, 3/4 GO/AO

  • Sean McMullen RF-2-4, 2B, SO
  • Trent Woodward 1B-4-4

Ferguson Homers Twice in 8-2 Win

The 2015 19th round pick, Drew Ferguson, had a memorable day at the plate. The Belmont product blasted two home runs at The Joe which is also a good hitter's park. Those were his first two shots of his professional career. Dexture McCall, a JuCo first baseman from the 2014 draft, also hit his first home run of the season.

  • Agapito Barrios-3 2/3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 4/2 GO/AO, 61/38 P/S, 42 GS

  • Johnny Sewald CF-2-4, 2B, BB
  • Dexture McCall DH-1-4, HR, 2 SO
  • Drew Ferguson LF-3-4, 2B, 2 HR

Abreu's Rough Day on the Mound Ends With 7-5 Loss

Conner Goedert was one of my favorite draft picks last year as JuCo third baseman with monster home run totals in the JuCo ranks. However his first shot at pro ball was awful. He wasn't able to translate his power from the BBCOR bats to the wood bats and he struck out a lot. This season, he's hit his first two home runs, reduced his strikeout rate so far, and he's hitting. The sample size in minuscule so rate stats are meaningless but it's good to see the power showing up.

  • Albert Abreu-3 2/3 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 3/2 GO/AO, 32 GS
  • Salvador Montano-2 1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO, 5/1 GO/AO
