Astros Prospect Report: July 9th, 2015

Some players just hit. Whether it's Tyler White, Jacob Nottingham, and maybe Justin Garcia.

White Picks Up First AAA HR in 5-4 Loss

Fresno took the lead in the top of the 7th but allowed a run in the bottom of the same inning to put it to a tie. This game carried on until the bottom of the 11th when Jake Buchanan allowed a run with two outs to end it.

Tyler White has become another one of those late round finds that you root for. He was a 33rd pick in 2013 and has done nothing but hit along the way. He has had to prove himself at every level since he started off in the GCL as such a late rounder. But, he's hit. And hit well. He walks more than he strikeouts (42/35 BB/SO). He just doesn't have the power you look for in a corner infielder. He has average power at best and will likely never reach 20 home runs. May not be an issue if he keeps his OBP over .400 like he has been.

CC Picks Up 3 in Bottom of the 9th for 8-7 Win

Chad Qualls is on the road to recovery. He made a rehab appearance to start off the game and picked up two outs but not before giving up a home run.

I always enjoy seeing a high run total without hitting for much power. Despite eight runs, the Hooks had just three extra base hits, all being doubles. They had 17 base runners, so they really did nickel and dime their way into a win.

Lancaster Has Hit Parade to Beat RC 7-5

Thirteen hits. Seven walks. Twenty base-runners. Five players with multi-hit games. A.J. Reed continues to hit the cover off the ball and his getting close to being at .350 for his batting average. But lets look a the sheriff. He's been in 8 games now for Lancaster and he's hit in every single one. Last night he hit a triple. He played catcher last night while Brian Holberton played LF (he even had an OF assist).

Martes Shines Again in 6-3 Win for QC

Francis Martes again had a strong outing on the mound. He posted a 62 game score and a 9/4 GO/AO ratio. One of the things you often worry about with power arms is a high walk-rate and again he didn't allow free base. As discussed in another article, his strikeout rate is a little subpar for what you'd expect but the BB/SO ratio is quite strong.

And let me just say, I wish Nick Tanielu had more pop in his bat.

TC Rained Out

Justin Garcia Breaks Out in G-Ville's 9-2 Win

Despite significant differences in the type of hitter Justin Garcia is compared to J.D. Martinez, he'll likely have to be mentioned with him for quite some time since they are both later round picks by the Astros from the same school. He hasn't been that strong in his brief pro career. But, last night he put it together for a three hit performance and all three went for doubles.
