After the Astros ran roughshod on the draft, picking up arguably three top-ten talents in the first 40 picks. Houston starts day two of the MLB Draft by selecting Riley Ferrell, right handed pitcher out of Texas Christian University.
Ferrell attended A&M Consolidated high school in college station. He was selected to the 2013 Big All-Freshman team and 2014 1st-team All-Big 12 Conference team.
He made 31 appearances out of the pen for the Horned Frogs in 2014, compiling a 0.79 ERA in 45 1/3 innings with 70 strikeouts and 14 walks. This season Ferrell is 1-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 28 2/3 innings of relief, striking out 45 and walking 19.
Ferrell could be Brandon Finnegan 2.0 for the Astros with a nice fastball, slider combo. He is currently ranked in the top 60 of draft prospects by Baseball America (59), Minorleagueball (36), and MLB.com (45).
Ferrell is the third TCU player to be selected in the 2015 , joining Alex Young (Diamondbacks, 43) and Tyler Alexander (65, Tigers). The Horn Frogs are making their second-straight trip to Omaha after defeating Texas A&M in the super regionals.
