The Captain has arrived

Man, all the top prospects have already been called up by now that you'd think the Houston brass is a little late to the party. But I guess you could call this being fashionably late.

The Houston Astros are finally promoting "Captain" Carlos Correa to the majors. His stats took a hit when moving from AA Corpus Christi to AAA Fresno but that's generally expected for a young player when getting tested at the next level. It's a little more surprising then that the front office decided 23 games with the Grizzlies was enough conditioning for the top-ranked shortstop prospect in terms of ability. He hit .266 with 3 home runs and 11 RBI, and his batting eye definitely has maintained a fairly good rate over the jump in competition (11:14 BB/K ratio). It's a big step down from the .385 he was hitting in AA, but that's still a pretty decent showing for a 20 year old player with just about 3 years of professional baseball seasoning. Now they can only hope that his bat at defense will hold up against the much tougher level of play he will see in the show.

With the move, Villar is surely going to be bumped from the starting spot as the Astros give Correa as many opportunities to prove himself. Villar was never particularly spectacular but was a serviceable player I suppose. And hopefully Correa's promotion is a display of power to the rest of the league; one that shows that 2015 marks the ascendance from the stepladder cellar dweller to a young powerhouse to the rest of the American League. They're here to play, and they have just the guy to prove it. Rejoice, Astros fans, the future is here.
