Astros Prospect Report: Games of June 25, 2015

Jon Singleton clubs two home runs in a losing effort, Brett Phillips struggles in his Texas League debut, and the ValleyCats pitchers combine to one-hit the Staten Island Yankees.

Your ALL Stars! - Today is your last day to vote for the Triple-A All-Stars in both the Pacific Coast and International Leagues. You can head over there and vote a straight Fresno ticket - except at third base. There, I recommend casting a vote for Chihuahuas Third Baseman (misprinted on the ballot as Brett Wallace). You have until 11:59 ET on June 26 to vote.

Franks, No Beans - In the most recent edition of Play Ball magazine, Fresno Grizzlies General Manager Derek Franks speaks about many things Grizzly. And a few things Astro, too.

Franks, 30, is feasting on the analytics from that night’s game. He inputs everything from how the Grizzlies Team Store did prior to first pitch down to how many slices of pizza were sold at stand one. He goes beyond the numbers and replays the in-game skits the entertainment crew did, how well giveaway distribution was executed, and even has ran out to the corner of Van Ness and Inyo street to direct cars to parking lots when an attendant didn’t show up. This is more of what a general manager of a Minor League Baseball team can expect to be a part of on any given day.

Sounds like a job with an Astros affiliate is right up this guy's alley, doesn't it?

What Happened Was...

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Grizzlies 5, Sacramento River Cats (SFG) 7

In the latest installment of the Highway 99 Series rivalry, the Grizzlies faced off against Matt Cain, touching him up for two runs on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. Brady Rodgers, meanwhile, struggled against the Sacramento offense, allowing ten hits and four runs over his five innings of work. Jon Singleton continued to impress in the losing effort, going 2-for-4 (the Grizzlies' only multi-hit player of the game) with a pair of home runs - the first one off of Cain. Andrew Aplin joined in with his second home run of the season.

Corpus Christi Hooks (AA) - Hooks 3, Frisco RoughRiders (TEX) 1

It's probably safe to call Brett Phillips a bust. In his Texas League debut, Maverick went 0-for-3 without hitting a single ball out of the infield. He did reach base on a HBP, though, so there's a chance his prospect value isn't completely diminished. After Brian Holmes took 93 pitches to get through 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on five hits and three walks, Aaron West took over with six up and six down. Chris Cotton and Jandel Gustave finished off the RoughRiders, with Gustave allowing the bullpen's only two runners, both courtesy of the walk.

Corpus Christi: 2-1 (1st - Texas League South)

  • RF Teoscar Hernandez - 1/4, R
  • CF Brett Phillips - 0/3, HBP

Lancaster Jethawks (A+) - Jethawks 8, Bakersfield Blaze (SEA) 6

Sometimes you have one of those innings. The third inning in this one was definitely one of those innings. After putting three runs on the board in the top of the frame, the Jethawks had some confidence as they trotted Edison Frias back out to the mound. But in the bottom of the inning, five runs crossed the plate - none of them earned. A Frias error on a sacrifice hit attempt, a Jack Mayfield throwing error with the bases loaded, and a wild pitch by Frias were lowlights, but the Tyler O'Neill home run and the Kyle Petty triple (typical Petty; he raced hard for 75% of the duration of the basepaths, but did not finish) didn't help either. The Jethawks bats battled back, however, and pulled ahead 6-5 in the fifth. The Blaze tied it up with another unearned run in the seventh, with an assist from an Alfredo Gonzalez throwing error. It would stay 6-6 until the twelfth inning, when back-to-back jacks by J.D. Davis and James Ramsay put the good guys ahead 8-6. Reymin Guduan took the mound for the save, allowing a single and a walk, but dancing out of trouble by putting on his Smokey hat and getting Burt Reynolds to strike out swinging.

Quad Cities River Bandits (A) - River Bandits 3, Cedar Rapids Kernels (MIN) 4

Down 3-2 entering the top of the ninth, Quad Cities' offense kicked into gear. With one out, Kristian Trompiz lined a single to right field. Luis Reynoso followed suit. A Thomas Lindauer single brought Trompiz around to score the game-tying run. The bottom of the inning didn't go as smoothly for the River Bandits, with Jorge Perez getting two outs before giving up the walkoff win. Lindauer was the story of the game, reaching base three times in four plate appearances to back up a strong start by Justin Ferrell.

Tri-City ValleyCats (A-) - ValleyCats 6, Staten Island Yankees (NYY) 0

Los Gatos sure do know how to have a home opener, with David Paulino taking the mound and leading a 6-0 shutout of the Yankees - on the same day that Dallas Keuchel blanked the big league Yankees. Paulino wasn't alone, though, with Zach Davis, Trent Thornton, and Juan Santos combining to hold up the shutout. Thornton earned the win despite being the only pitcher to allow a hit - which came off the bat of Griffin Gordon in the seventh inning.

Tri-City: 4-3 (2nd - New York-Penn League Stedler, 2.0 GB)

  • CF Johnny Sewald - 3/4, 3 RBI, K, SB

Greeneville Astros (Rk) - Astros 2, Bristol Pirates (PIT) 1

It took twelve innings, but an Arturo Michelena sacrifice fly was finally the difference-maker as the Astros won this one in walk-off fashion. After clubbing the first home run of his professional career, shortstop Osvaldo Duarte reached via walk with one out in the twelfth inning. He advanced to third on a double by Myles Straw before Michelena - pinch-hitting for Luis Payano - put a ball deep enough into right field to score him. The score backed up a strong game by Greeneville's pitching staff, with six pitchers combining to strike out thirteen Pirates batters, allowing just a single run on eleven hits and six walks.

Greeneville: 2-1 (1st - Appalachian League West)

  • SS Osvaldo Duarte - 1/4, HR, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB
  • CF Myles Straw - 1/5, 2B, HBP
