2015 MLB Draft Profile: Michael Hickman, C, Seven Lakes HS, Katy, TX

Hometown kid with smooth lefty stroke and good receiving abilities at a position the Astro's need more talent at.

Info

Height: 6-1

Weight: 205

Bats/Throws: L/R

HS: Seven Lakes, Katy, TX

Summary

Michael has really a lot of things that look good from a hitting standpoint, stays level with some uppercut, has good bat speed, keeps his hands high and drives the ball.  He does tend to get pull happy from the video I have seen but that is common across all elite high school prospects, he does make the effort to go the other way though.

Catching wise he stays really quiet and looks to be a good receiver, his arm strength does not blow me away but there was not a ton of video of real game throws which is what I would base that off of.  Although a couple of sites list his arm strength higher than I am seeing.  PG lists his pop time as 1.88 which is which is near the top of the class.

Edit: First hand reports tells of good to great arm strength.

Overall, I would love to see us getting this kid anywhere in round 5-12, maybe going a bit overslot if after round 7 to sway him.  Our system needs an influx of catching talent and I think this kid has some talent that can be developed.

Perfect Game summary of him:

"Bat needs to be watched very closely.  Huge bat-speed and power potential.  Showed big power at the PG Jr. National.  Good at PG MLK Showed big power also at WWBA WC."

College Commitment

Oklahoma - yuck, come on man you got Texas A&M, UT and Rice not to mention countless other options.  I am starting to question his judgement in calling games if this is the route he has chosen...  I kid, I kid.

Will he sign?

Well if your college commitment is Oklahoma and you are in the heart of Texas I would think he sign for pennies on the dollar.
