Jandel Gustave is heading to his fourth team this offseason. Gustave was selected from the Astros farm system in the Rule 5 draft by the Red Sox. Boston turned around and traded his rights to the Royals, who put him on waivers this week. The San Diego Padres have selected Gustave off waivers, preventing a possible return to the Astros.
Gustave was claimed by the Padres. #Royals— Josh Vernier (@JoshVernier610) March 26, 2015
As a result of the claim, the Padres must pay the Royals $25,000 for Gustave's services and the process to retain his rights starts over. Gustave must remain on the Padres 25-man roster the entire season, and at least 90 days on the active roster if put on the disabled list (90 can be split over multiple seasons). The Padres can place Gustave on waivers, and if not claimed he can be offered back to the Astros.
Gustave posted a 1-0 record with a 3.68 ERA, 7.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO this spring with the Royals.
